Recommendations on sport and health Print

We are pleased to see an increase in the number of people who are doing something for their fitness and people participating in open races. Unfortunately, the number of medical incidents has also risen. A number of these incidents could have been avoided with proper preparation. This includes concerted training, whereby corresponding training units should be completed for competitions over longer distances. You should also pay attention to the correct clothing and running shoes, which should be broken in, proper nutrition and regular medical check-ups of your overall health. New runners over 35 years of age should first consult their family doctor to clarify the most important personal health risks. Even after good preparation, you should still pay attention to the following points:

  • Only start if you feel absolutely fit on the day. Do not start if you have suffered any illness with fever in the week before the run. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
  • Drink 2–3 dl of unsweetened tea, water or an isotonic drink 15 to 30 minutes before the start. Use every drinks stand for a small refreshment, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Wear some protection on your head in warm and sunny weather.
  • Stop your run immediately if you feel a sensation of pressure, constriction under your breastbone or above your heart or should you feel generally unwell or have a sensation of general weakness and difficulty in breathing. Consult a first-aid station or a doctor immediately.
  • The most common problems suffered by joggers such a blisters, stitch in the side, cramps, muscular pains or hunger do not require direct medical attention, you can treat these yourself or have them attended to in a first-aid station.
